Weekly Meetings


To make sure lab meetings do not play out this way, this semester, weekly lab meetings will cover a variety of topics (below), all of which are vital for successful research in the lab. If you have anything else you want to learn about please email and I'll add it to the list.

Sept 19- (Max, Sterling, & Rick)
- How to get an experiment up and running

- How to find literature.
- How to write a paper.
  - Essentials and style
  - APA Publication Manual

Sept 26- (Sterling & Max)
- How to write/use macros and formulas in excel.
  - Regular Expressions

Oct 3- (Sterling)
- How to filter data
  - Email me if you need SPSS or go here.
  - Try to remove subjects and outliers in a datafile. In LanguageR or nlme, there are plenty of datasets you can use.

Oct 10- (Sterling)
- How to run mixed models in R & SPSS.
  - Click here for Baayen's book. Mixed models are covered in chapter seven.

Oct 17- Fall Break

- How to program/run/collate data in ePrime.

Halloween- (Max & Vivek)
- How to obtain n-gram frequencies.

After lab meetings there is an optional meeting in which we will discuss papers, brainstorm, debate… basically it's just like a party. You are not at all obligated to attend… seriously, nobody cares. However, if you want to come the only requirement is that you read the following papers:

Sept 19-

- Fletcher, 1994

Sept 26-
- Still waiting for someone to locate the readings… here are the books in which they can be found.

Oct 3-
- Louwerse, 2007. Disambiguating propositions: How to clear the confusion in linguistics and psychology about this notion. (copies in the lab)
- Jurafsky & Martin, chapter 4, the part about Chinese restaurants.

Oct 10-
- Kintsch & van Dijk, 1978

At some point in the not too distant future...
